Ranking the De-Aged Actors in the Jurassic Park Super Bowl Commercial from Least to Most Uncanny

I’m not particularly invested in the Super Bowl LX showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots—go sports!—but I’m definitely looking forward to the commercials. Bring on the absurdity, the cringe-worthy moments, and those overly sincere beer ads featuring horses. However, if Xfinity’s Jurassic Park-themed ad is any indication, this year could really push the limits of how wild the spending can get without frying my brain.

The commercial cleverly uses scenes from Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 film, along with newly de-aged footage of stars Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, to envision how things might have played out in Jurassic Park if Xfinity internet had been there to support the compromised security system. The result? A vacation where dinosaurs are safely contained, allowing Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, and Ian Malcolm to kick back by the pool and snap selfies with a T. rex.

However, the combination of ’90s nostalgia and the de-aged performances of these seasoned actors is downright unsettling! Just a few years ago in Jurassic World: Dominion, we saw the original trio in roles that matched their actual ages. Now, Comcast has hit rewind, placing Jurassic Park in a world where Grant can livestream on Instagram? The ad creators were so focused on whether they could do this that they didn’t consider if they should.

Here’s a definitive ranking of the de-aging effects in Xfinity’s Jurassic Park Super Bowl commercial, from least to most bizarre:

Dern was just 26 when she starred in Spielberg’s film, and honestly, she doesn’t look that much different 33 years later! It seems we still haven’t mastered the art of seamlessly inserting a running actor into a scene with a flock of Gallimimus.

These days, de-aging effects work well for actors who are completely still, like Dr. Malcolm lounging in his poolside chair. The technique falters when the actor is, say, walking toward a massive pile of shrimp. (But Goldblum’s line, “That’s one big pile of shrimp,” is pure gold.)

How could anyone do this to the international treasure that is Sam Neill?
