Longlegs Star Shares Encouraging Update on Horror Sequel They Follow: “I’ve Received Some Positive News Recently”

Twelve years after the original film, Maika Monroe, known for her role in It Follows, has shared some encouraging news about the long-awaited sequel, They Follow.

“There’s been a lot of buzz about it happening. I think it’s good to stay optimistic because I’ve recently heard some positive updates,” Monroe mentioned in a conversation. “So we’ll see what happens.”

The 2014 film It Follows features Monroe as Jay, a college student who becomes the target of a lethal, sexually transmitted entity after her first sexual encounter. Director David Robert Mitchell is set to return for the sequel, which is expected to take place a decade later. They Follow was first announced in 2023, but production has faced several delays since then.

Although filming hasn’t started yet, Monroe has had the chance to read the script. “It’s completely different from what I imagined for Jay’s character, which I found really intriguing,” she shared.

“I was like, ‘Whoa! Cool,’ and I think the audience will likely feel the same way. I know it sounds a bit cliché, but we’re staying true to the original with the same team involved… The story remains in that universe, but it’s more expansive, and I’m genuinely excited about it.”

In the years since It Follows, Monroe has established herself as a scream queen with roles in films like Longlegs, Villains, and Watcher.

As we await further news on They Follow, keep an eye out for the best upcoming horror movies set to release in 2026.
