“Epic Games Store Leader: ‘We Allow Players to Choose’ on AI-Driven Games”

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, has previously voiced his concerns about AI disclosure tags on Steam listings, believing they could negatively impact “small developers.” However, Steve Allison, the VP and GM of the Epic Games Store, offers a more nuanced perspective in a recent interview, emphasizing that the store’s approach to AI-generated content ultimately lies in the hands of the developers and players.

When asked about the Epic Games Store’s position on AI, Allison stated, “We do not police how developers make their games,” which includes their choice to incorporate AI technology. He echoed Sweeney’s sentiment, suggesting that if AI enables smaller teams to achieve more, he doesn’t view it negatively as some might. This aligns with the thoughts of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s lead writer, Daniel Vávra, who expressed on Twitter in 2025 that while generative AI could pose risks, it also has the potential to help smaller teams create impressive games more efficiently.

Allison clarified that the Epic Games Store maintains a neutral stance on AI, saying, “We don’t take a positive or negative stance on it. We’re kind of neutral there.” He emphasized that it’s up to the community to determine their views on AI’s role in gaming, stating, “We let players decide. We let developers decide how they’re going to communicate with their players.”

In terms of competition, Allison noted that the goal for the Epic Games Store isn’t to dethrone Steam but rather to secure enough market share on PC to ensure that developers feel they need to be present on the platform.
