Anbernic’s RG Vita handheld arrives ahead of Sony, but it doesn’t quite capture the essence of the PS Vita.

It was only a matter of time before Anbernic crafted a tribute to the PS Vita, and they’ve just unveiled a “first look” at their PlayStation-inspired handheld. As expected, it channels the design of Sony’s 2010s PSP successor, but I feel it could have gone further.

In a newly released YouTube clip, the leading gaming handheld maker showcases stunning visuals of both the Anbernic RG Vita and RG Vita “Pro.” At first glance, the standard model resembles the Trimu Smart Pro currently on my test bench, but the bubble accents around the face buttons and raised transparent shoulders clearly indicate it’s meant to be a specific clone.

The teaser also shows that the base version features oval concave grips on each side, mirroring the PS Vita, but it doesn’t reveal the back of the Pro version. When placed side by side, the models look quite similar, and I suspect we might be witnessing a scenario akin to the Anbernic RG Cube versus the more affordable Cubexx, where the Pro offers toned-down features and specs.

Anbernic hasn’t provided any RG Vita details beyond the teaser trailer yet, so I can’t comment on the performance of the portable. What I’m particularly curious about is whether the retro handheld brand has included a touchpad in the Pro version, as that could explain the lack of a back reveal. This addition would make it a more authentic alternative to the PS Vita in terms of functionality.

Before diving into ambitious features, I want to highlight some design choices that are, perhaps unfairly, bothering me. First off, Anbernic has omitted the lanyard holes on each side, which I consider one of the handheld’s most iconic visual elements.

As a result, it feels like the thumbsticks are positioned slightly higher compared to an actual PS Vita. This might lead to a more comfortable experience when using either RG Vita model, prompting me to reconsider my stance, but it does create a different feel. I also can’t shake the feeling that Anbernic missed out on some fun branding opportunities by not replicating the oval PlayStation button on the left side of the original portable and the bezel text, both of which are absent in the new clones.

That said, I’m still excited to see the PS Vita making a sort of comeback, especially since Sony seems slow to develop a successor. However, the RG Vita lineup feels more like a nod to the original handheld rather than a true homage, which is surprising given how closely the Anbernic RG35XXSP resembles a Game Boy Advance SP.

But hey, if Sony sticks with its PlayStation Portal design for the future PS6 handheld, Anbernic’s latest portable might be the last Vita-shaped device we see.
