Elevate Your Portable Gaming with the Hori Gengar & Mimikyu Switch 2 Vault Case
The Hori Gengar and Mimikyu Vault Case for the Nintendo Switch 2 stands out in a market flooded with generic black and gray accessories. While it’s not the first case to feature licensed Pokémon artwork, its charming pastel colors and delightful Gengar and Mimikyu designs cater to adult fans, making it a must-have for any millennial Pokémon enthusiast. Priced at $37.49 / £26.99, it’s a bit pricier than standard cases, but that’s typical for licensed merchandise. For those on a tight budget, especially after investing over $400 in the new handheld, alternatives like the PowerA Slim Case might be more suitable. However, this Hori case is perfect for fans of Pokémon and ghost-types alike.
The Hori Gengar and Mimikyu Vault Case is available at its full MSRP of $37.49 at various US retailers, while those in the UK may find it primarily at the official Hori Europe online store for £26.99.
The standout feature of this case is its design, which appeals even to non-Pokémon fans. The exterior showcases glossy artwork of the iconic Gengar surrounded by playful Mimikyu, using a soft purple and yellow color palette that gives it a gentle, whimsical vibe, rather than the bold colors often seen in Western Pokémon merchandise.
Hori is known for its beautiful designs, and this case continues that trend with its pastel shades and subtle Pokémon details, similar to the Eevee Cottage Core Switch 2 range. As a fan of ghost-types, I’m particularly drawn to this case, though I wish Hori had added a few more unique touches.
I love that the outer edge, zipper, stitching, and interior all match the light purple of Gengar’s grin on the front. However, aside from the artwork, there’s little else that screams Pokémon. Unlike other cases, such as the PlayTrek Mario Bricks Switch 2 Travel Case, this one lacks additional branding or imagery on the back, which feels like a missed opportunity.
It would have been great if Hori had included a Gengar-shaped zipper tag or more artwork on the back. Instead, aside from some confetti swirls and small Pikachu/Mimikyu outlines, the design elements are quite limited.
The Hori Gengar and Mimikyu Vault Case is essentially a standard Vault Case with a Pokémon twist. Measuring 18.31 x 14.2 x 12.8 inches, it features a fabric handle coated in a silicone-like material for easy transport. Once you unzip the Hori-branded zippers, you’ll find a purple mesh pocket on the upper exterior.
This pocket consists of two overlapping compartments, which cleverly keeps the game storage flap out of the way. The flap itself has 10 pockets that fit both Switch 2 and Switch game cards, securely holding everything from Animal Crossing: New Horizons to Donkey Kong Bananza.
The bottom of this section includes a small piece of Velcro that secures the game storage flap, and you’ll need to undo this strap to insert the Switch 2 (or compatible Switch OLED). The console stays in place thanks to molded ridges at the bottom of the case.
I enjoyed using this Hori case so much that I was hesitant to remove my Switch 2 from its lovely pastel interior when it was time to test another case.
As a Pokémon fan, especially a Gengar enthusiast, carrying my handheld in a case adorned with such beautiful artwork of one of my favorite ghost-types was a real treat. While Gengar-themed accessories aren’t new, I prefer Hori’s choice of soft, pastel colors over the darker, more saturated purples used by other brands.
Mimikyu also makes an appearance on the case, and the combination of the two is a fantastic choice. The muted purple tones complement each other beautifully, making it one of the best-looking cases I’ve tested. Not only does it look great, but it has also held up well over the month I’ve had my handheld inside.
I’ve taken this case everywhere, and the carrying handle makes it easy to bring along. I haven’t noticed any cosmetic damage to my Switch 2 or the games stored inside since switching to this case. However, the case itself has developed a few minor abrasions on the glossy artwork. While they’re not easily visible, I do worry about how the printed design will hold up over time.
For Pokémon fans seeking a travel-friendly case for the Nintendo Switch 2 with a hardshell exterior, this official Hori accessory is a solid choice, especially for those who love Gengar and Mimikyu.
Hori’s Vault Case is also available in official Super Mario and Pokémon Eevee designs for those who prefer a less spooky aesthetic. For ghost-type enthusiasts, this case is robust enough to protect the Nintendo handheld, games, and accessories. Unfortunately, the interior pocket doesn’t accommodate the matching Gengar and Mimikyu Game Storage case, but the main concern is finding the case in stock.
The official Hori Gengar and Mimikyu accessories feature some of the most unique Pokémon artwork I’ve seen on Switch 2 gear, leading to high demand at retailers in both the US and UK. Even when available, the price of $37.49 / £26.99 can vary. If you can snag it at MSRP, this charming hardshell case is one of the best options for spooky Pokémon fans. Here’s hoping its availability improves and it doesn’t vanish into the shadows.
Since late last year, my Nintendo Switch 2 has been safely stored in this official Hori case. Over the past month, I’ve taken it everywhere, whether just moving between rooms or heading into the city for a quick check on my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island.
During this testing period, I also stored various Switch 2 and Switch games and smaller accessories inside the case to see how well they were protected during travel and whether they sustained any unwanted cosmetic damage.
