As a fan of both Sailor Moon and action RPGs, I found a lot to love in Starlight Re:Volver, both visually and mechanically. Unfortunately, the game’s potential has been abruptly halted due to funding issues, with developer Pahdo Labs announcing the cancellation of this title along with another roguelike project.

“Since our last update in November, we’ve been facing the reality that Starlight Re:Volver did not achieve the commercial success necessary to keep Pahdo Labs afloat,” said Daniel Zou, the studio’s CEO and founder, in a statement shared on Starlight’s official social media. “We aimed high, spread ourselves too thin, and delivered a game that couldn’t maintain a healthy player base.”

Zou noted that the “mixed initial reviews and a declining player base” led to investors pulling their financial support, which also affected the development of a second game, Edge of Divinity. “We thought creating a demo for a familiar yet fresh game would be our best chance,” he explained. “Sadly, we have not yet secured the necessary funding.”

The team included former developers from major studios, lending Starlight some serious credibility. With its colorful and vibrant design, Re:Volver was an eye-catching debut with significant potential for growth. Many shared this sentiment, as Zou highlighted the over $17 million raised to support the studio’s initiatives.

“The majority of those funds went towards competitive developer salaries, art, and content production,” he stated. “Just over half of that total was allocated to Starlight Re:Volver’s development, while the remainder supported past and experimental projects, primarily Halcyon Zero.”

This earlier project was the precursor to Starlight, which Pahdo Labs pivoted from to create the anime-inspired action-adventure. In closing, Zou confirmed that Starlight Re:Volver will remain available as a single-player experience, and a demo for Edge of Divinity is now live on Steam. “This is goodbye for now,” he concluded.

RPG legend returns to the franchise he co-created 40 years ago as an advisor for Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, enhancing the guidance already provided to the team.
