A new trading card game aims to bring monster horror to life like MTG did for fantasy.
Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster are gearing up for an epic showdown—no Dark Universe needed.
A new trading card game is on the horizon, thanks to a collaboration between a global toy and entertainment company and a tabletop game studio known for its innovative designs. Announced on February 3, Hellbreak is a TCG co-created with the team behind KeyForge.
The game is set in a “Monster Sandbox,” where iconic horror characters clash in intense battles. The initial card set will showcase a diverse lineup of characters from Universal’s rich legacy of horror, featuring classics and modern icons alike. Expect to see familiar faces like Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Mummy, and other Universal legends. This could be the reboot of the Dark Universe fans have been hoping for.
The creators hint that this is just the start, describing Hellbreak as “an unprecedented horror crossover universe” that may include characters from other major studios in the genre. While specific gameplay mechanics and additional horror icons are still under wraps, the project has the potential to incorporate characters from studios like Blumhouse Productions, known for hits like The Purge and Insidious. We do know that “character factions” will play a role in the game mechanics.
“Hellbreak was designed to feel dangerous, cinematic, and endlessly replayable,” said the CEO of the tabletop studio and design lead on the project. “Every monster, mechanic, and aspect is crafted to create unforgettable and terrifying moments at the table—experiences players will remember long after the game ends.”
Hellbreak is set for a global launch in fall 2026, with more details about gameplay and artwork expected to drop in the coming months.
