The hit adaptation of Fallout on Prime TV is a collaboration between Amazon and Bethesda, the rights holder for the IP. However, according to Bruce Nesmith, a former veteran of Bethesda who departed in 2021, the revenue from the TV show is minimal compared to the massive earnings from blockbuster games like Skyrim.
“What you have to realize about things like the Fallout TV show is that they don’t make Bethesda money directly,” Nesmith explained. “I would be shocked if Bethesda is making any money that they care about really, not when you make literally billions of dollars on Skyrim. What you’re going to make by licensing the IP to this TV show is just peanuts.”
So, why license a beloved IP if the direct financial gain is minimal? The clear advantage for Bethesda lies in the heightened interest in the IP that comes with a successful adaptation, which the Fallout show has certainly achieved.
“What it gets you is notoriety. It’s marketing. Do they really need marketing for Elder Scrolls 6?,” Nesmith questioned. The answer is likely no, but it’s hard to ignore the significant discounts on the entire Fallout game series just as the acclaimed second season of the TV show wraps up. It seems like a mutually beneficial relationship, even if Amazon isn’t directly sharing profits with Bethesda.
In other news, Todd Howard has confirmed that Elder Scrolls 6 will “most definitely” feature more trees than Skyrim.
