Employees from the team behind Doom are rallying around a devoted superfan facing terminal illness, who has chosen to spend his final days as a Doom Slayer.

A Reddit user recently shared a touching image of himself playing Doom: The Dark Ages in a hospital room. He revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and now has “possibly weeks” to live.

The user, a Doom fan since 2016, mentioned he had played through the reboot, Doom Eternal, and all its DLCs, but hadn’t been able to experience the latest title until the hospital in Toronto provided a PS5 and the new Doom game for him to enjoy from his bed.

“I’m currently blasting through hordes of demons in Chapter 4, and I feel nothing but pure joy as I embrace my roots as a badass Demon Slayer,” he wrote. “I may not live to see the upcoming DLC, but I’m thrilled to finally have the game in my hands.”

“To the developers, thank you for creating such a beautiful piece of art that not only brought the FPS genre back to its roots but also revitalized it in ways no other game has,” he added. “And thank you for crafting such an incredible series for fans like me.

“Rip & Tear, lads!”

Pinned to the top of the post are heartfelt messages from various members of the Doom development team, including the director of the recent titles and the series creator.

“I remind the team constantly that people care about our games, and we need to put the same level of care into making them,” said the director. “It has been the honor of our lives to create these past three games for fans like you. To make the Slayer feel STRONG in DOOM, we infuse him with the qualities of a true old-school hero: strength, courage, and heart… we make him like you. RIP AND TEAR, my friend. You are the real Slayer.”

The series creator expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m moved and honored that you’ve carried DOOM with you for a decade and chose to immerse yourself in DOOM as your journey nears its end. You embody bravery and courage. You are the reason DOOM exists.

“When we created DOOM, we aimed to build a world where you felt powerful, even against overwhelming odds,” he continued. “Knowing it has been a companion to you, something familiar and alive, means more to me than I can express.

“You are not alone in that hospital room. You stand where millions of us have stood, fighting. Every enemy, every level, every moment matters because you do.”

A community manager, who has participated in official Doom livestreams for years, also reached out to the user via direct message, expressing a desire to help in any way possible.

In light of the support he’s received, the user expressed his gratitude, stating it’s “an extreme privilege” to be part of the Doom community.

The outpouring of support from the Doom community is truly remarkable. One message that stands out comes from another user, who shared a powerful sentiment:

“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rip & tear against the dying of the light.”
