Fallout Season 2 Finale Hints at Exciting New Location and Major Developments

The finale of Fallout’s second season may not have wrapped up every storyline introduced this season, but it did hint at a rarely explored location from the games and brought back a significant element from Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. Spoilers ahead for the entire season and the finale episode, so if you haven’t seen it yet and want to avoid spoilers, now’s the time to stop scrolling!

After two seasons of the Ghoul’s quest to find his family, the finale finally reveals their empty cryopods tucked away in a secret Vault beneath Mr. House’s Lucky 38 Casino. Ouch. However, inside his wife’s pod is a postcard from Colorado, sparking hope that his family might still be alive in the Midwest.

This sets him off on a new adventure to locate his wife and daughter after a grueling 200 years. During the credits, a billboard hints that the next season will at least partially take place in Colorado. So, what do we know about Colorado in the Fallout universe, and what can we anticipate?

Colorado has been mentioned a few times in previous games and Fallout media, but it hasn’t played a major role. Like much of the U.S. in Fallout, it was largely devastated by the nuclear bombs during the Great War. The most notable appearance of Colorado in the games occurred in Fallout Tactics, which isn’t entirely canon, but some elements might be. In that 2001 tactical RPG spin-off, we encounter Vault 0.

Vault 0 is located in an expanded version of the real-life Cheyenne Mountain Complex, a massive underground military bunker designed to withstand nuclear war and other catastrophic events. The specifics of Fallout Tactics aren’t crucial, but Vault 0 and the Cheyenne Mountain Complex could be significant in season three. The Enclave is still around, and it would make sense for them to take refuge in a place like that to avoid the wasteland’s dangers.

Interestingly, as noted in the lead-up to Fallout’s first season, an hour-long video about the opening of Vault 33 was posted, where an announcer mentioned, “Unless you’re the President of the United States or something like that, and you have a mountain in Colorado to go under and direct the events of the world.” Who did Cooper Howard encounter this season and hand the Cold Fusion capsule to? The president. It seems likely that Vault 0 or a version of it will be featured in season three.

Another intriguing point about Colorado is that the original version of Fallout 3, which was being developed by Black Isle Studios before its cancellation, was set to include parts of Colorado. It’s fitting that Colorado is poised to play a significant role in the upcoming season, given its previous appearances in both Fallout Tactics and the original Fallout 3 (Project Van Buren).

After the credits, a post-credits scene features Elder Cleric Quintus and Dane back at the Brotherhood’s Area 51 base, which we saw earlier this season. Chaos continues there after Maximus took off with the Cold Fusion capsule. Dane presents Quintus with a scroll, declaring that Quintus the Unifier is no more; he is now Quintus the Destroyer, and he unveils a blueprint for Liberty Prime.

We technically caught a glimpse of what appears to be Liberty Prime earlier this season in a photo featuring Mr. House’s body double. However, this marks the giant democracy-defending robot’s first real appearance in the show, albeit as a blueprint schematic.

This seems to be a new iteration of the iconic robot, dubbed Liberty Prime Alpha, which differs from the mech that first appeared in Fallout 3 and later in Fallout 4. I’m not entirely convinced that this ragtag chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel will manage to construct their own Liberty Prime. Perhaps it’s hidden away in Area 51? We’ll have to wait for season three to find out.
