Send Help is a horror-comedy that follows two city dwellers trying to survive on a deserted island. While the setting has its challenges, the real tension stems from the characters’ complex relationship rather than the environment. Behind the scenes, the location posed its own difficulties…

“We had to prioritize safety,” producer Zainab Azizi shares. “We filmed on a coconut farm, so we had to clear the coconuts, as they can be a major hazard in those areas.”

“It’s a fun fact, but also a rather embarrassing way to go,” she laughs. “We had to build stairs down to the beach and learned a lot about sound on set, clearing footsteps and trash – it was disheartening to see all the debris that washed ashore – to create this picturesque, isolated setting.”

Starring Dylan O’Brien and Rachel McAdams, Send Help combines elements of Cast Away and Misery, as the ruthless executive Bradley Preston faces unexpected challenges when he and his timid employee, Linda Liddle, crash in the Gulf of Thailand. Their mutual disdain is palpable, especially after Bradley overlooked Linda for a significant promotion. However, the dynamic shifts dramatically when Linda begins to leverage her survival skills, revealing secrets from their past. “We’re not in the office anymore,” she ominously states.

“The writers emphasized character development over mere survival,” director Sam Raimi explains. “The island becomes a backdrop for their true selves to emerge. The boss was cruel, while the worker was diligent and loyal. Stripped of their office roles, their true natures are revealed, free from the constraints of power dynamics.”

“Now, their worth is determined by their skills in this new environment. He struggles, while she possesses valuable knowledge,” he continues. “We witness a shift in power, and while she grows, it’s not all positive. Her past relationships and darker aspects come to light. [Bradley] has reasons for his actions, which don’t excuse them, but provide context for his character. The writers aimed to use the island as a space for revelation rather than just a survival scenario, although we had fun with that aspect too.”
