Surprise! The iconic horror classic Texas Chain Saw Massacre is being adapted into a TV series by an unexpected team: A24, writer JT Mollner, and actor Glen Powell.

According to reports, A24 has secured the rights to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.

At this point, the specifics of the TV show remain under wraps, but co-writer Kim Henkel hinted, “There’s an epic tale lurking in the Chainsaw backstory.”

Mollner, who will direct the project, has made it clear that he’s not interested in remaking the 1974 classic.

“I’ve publicly stated that I’m not keen on remaking perfect films, and the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a perfect film,” Mollner said. “When the idea for a long-form exploration of this world came to me, I saw it as a fresh approach to honor and expand on the existing folklore. This is the only way I wanted to do it – and I can’t imagine better partners for this concept than A24. It’s truly an honor.”

Interestingly, another film is also in development as part of this deal, which is currently in the early stages.

While Powell is involved as an executive producer for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, he is not expected to appear on screen.

A24 has gained a reputation for its horror films over the past decade, unsettling audiences with titles like Hereditary and Robert Eggers’ The Witch.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise has a rich history in the horror genre, with the original 1974 film famously banned in several countries due to its graphic content. The then-BBFC chief James Ferman even referred to it as a “pornography of terror.”

Since its debut, the franchise has spawned eight sequels, the latest being the poorly received 2022 Netflix release Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
