Overwatch 2 Transitions to a Permanent Overwatch Experience
Overwatch 2 is set to revert back to being simply Overwatch, as Blizzard shifts its focus away from the sequel concept for its hero shooter. The announcement came during a recent showcase, which notably dropped the “Overwatch 2” title, emphasizing a unified identity for the game rather than a sequential franchise.
“Every year, we aim to bring major updates that improve and expand what it means to play and experience Overwatch,” said game director Aaron Keller during the showcase. “We realized Overwatch is a game that transcends any single number. Moving forward, we’re dropping the ‘2’ and continuing simply as Overwatch.”
Blizzard is implementing a yearly storytelling model for Overwatch, with each year featuring six seasons that align with a new narrative. This will include events and game additions that coincide with key story milestones. Keller mentioned that the story will unfold through in-game events, comics, stories, and videos, similar to the animated Vendetta trailer and the short that opened the showcase, all accessible in the in-game “story” tab.
This name change indicates there won’t be an Overwatch 3, and the essence of what made Overwatch 2 special in 2025 will remain intact. Blizzard intends to build on the elements that resonated with players after the cancellation of the game’s PvE mode. The stadium remains a core aspect of the game and is set to expand each season. Season one will introduce five new characters tied to the Overwatch universe, framing the new conflict with Talon, along with additional voice lines for existing characters and two new maps for core modes.
Fans on the Overwatch 2 subreddit had speculated about this shift after noticing a Steam product update that removed the “2,” and many expressed excitement about the change. Some felt it was a long-overdue adjustment, arguing that players “never really got Overwatch 2.” Even those who viewed it as a distinct sequel often referred to it simply as “Overwatch.”
Blizzard initially had grand plans for Overwatch 2, including a significant PvE component with replayable story missions, an expansion of the narrative surrounding the global conflict with Talon, and a transition to faster, damage-focused gameplay. However, these plans led to the original Overwatch being shut down when Overwatch 2 launched in October 2022, and only a fraction of those changes came to fruition. The PvE mode was ultimately scrapped, and the few missions that were released received mixed feedback. Storytelling only regained focus in the latter half of 2025. While combat did evolve with the shift to 5v5 team setups, complaints about hero roles blending into various damage types prompted Blizzard to refocus on defining character roles within their kits.
The transition to the new name will take effect when Overwatch season 1 launches on February 10.
