World of Warcraft’s upcoming Midnight expansion, set to launch on March 2, promises to shake things up with a new housing feature and a host of customization options. Developer Blizzard emphasizes that this ambitious project was achieved without the dreaded crunch.

Game director Ion Hazzikostas shared in a recent interview that while Midnight is the fastest expansion they’ve ever produced, the team didn’t have to sacrifice their personal time to achieve its scale and quality.

“No corners cut, no compromises in terms of what we’re delivering to our players, and no sacrifices to quality,” Hazzikostas stated. “Most importantly, no sacrifices to team health.”

He also noted that the industry’s notorious crunch periods, which demand excessive hours from employees, are thankfully becoming less acceptable. Hazzikostas remarked that while such sacrifices have been common, change is on the horizon. Midnight was developed without the pressure of weekend work or extended hours.

Blizzard’s commitment to a balanced development approach is crucial for both World of Warcraft and its creators. “At the end of the day,” Hazzikostas emphasized, “we’re going to keep making this game for years and decades. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and we need to treat it accordingly.”

With Midnight, players will finally have a place to call their own in Azeroth, marking a significant milestone in the game’s evolution.
