Chiwetel Ejiofor is reuniting with Mike Flanagan for a fresh take on The Exorcist.

According to an official announcement, Ejiofor will join the cast alongside previously confirmed actors Diane Lane, Scarlett Johansson, and Jacobi Jupe. Details about the plot and characters remain under wraps, but the film is being described as a “radical redo,” centering on a father seeking help for his possessed child.

Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment are collaborating with Universal, which acquired the rights to The Exorcist franchise for $400 million in 2021. Filming is set to commence in New York City this spring.

It’s important to note that this upcoming film is not connected to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, which faced negative reviews and disappointing box office performance. As a result, Universal scrapped plans for a trilogy, including the previously announced sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver, and opted to bring in a new director.

Ejiofor is widely recognized (especially among younger audiences) for his role as Rex Strickland in the Sony Venom series and as Kal Mordo from Earth-828 in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He is a five-time Golden Globe nominee and received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in 12 Years a Slave.

The Exorcist is scheduled to hit theaters on March 27, 2027. For more, check out our guide to the most exciting upcoming horror movies on the horizon.
