Recently, there was a major announcement regarding Overwatch 2, which is now simply Overwatch again, and fans are crediting Marvel Rivals for revitalizing the hero shooter genre.
The Overwatch team shared a lot of exciting news, but the highlight is the introduction of 10 new characters this year, a significant increase from the usual three. Five of these characters, including Jetpack Cat, will be available next week. Blizzard is also launching an annual storyline that will unfold through animated shorts, in-game comics, and more, alongside extensive changes to the UI, progression systems, perks, and nearly every aspect of the game.
“Marvel Rivals literally saved this game,” one player commented in response to Overwatch’s first full animated short in a while. “This is why competition is beneficial. Glad to see them seriously commit. Might actually bring me back for the first time in years.”
“I know I might get flamed for saying this, but Marvel Rivals is the best thing to happen to Overwatch,” another player added.
Twitch streamer Christopher ‘Jay3’ Pavloff tweeted that the most exciting part of Overwatch stepping up is that Marvel Rivals will notice the changes and strive to improve as well, leading to a back-and-forth battle of enhancements that will benefit players of both games. We can thank Jeff (Kaplan and the Land Shark) for that.
Overwatch game director Aaron Keller welcomed the competition months ago but clarified that the updates we’re seeing in the hero shooter are not a direct response to Marvel Rivals, as last year’s significant changes were already in the works before any lasting competition emerged.
Keller had hinted at this year’s major overhaul as early as September 2025, envisioning “a future where we become less conservative and create high-impact, high-octane moments that hopefully blow your minds,” while promising that 2026 would kick off with a bang.

The Overwatch 2 director acknowledged that the FPS “dropped the ball when it comes to story,” but expressed a desire for those exciting animated shorts to return and “would love” to see a TV show.
