The Fallout team is committed to practical effects, as producer Jonathan Nolan reveals they are working hard to create the Brotherhood of Steel’s impressive new weapon physically for season 3.
Warning: spoilers for the Fallout season 2 ending follow.
In the post-credits scene of Fallout season 2, episode 8, we see the Brotherhood’s Elder Cleric Quintus receive blueprints for Liberty Prime Alpha—a massive robot designed to end wars. This revelation surprised fans, but Nolan has been advocating for its inclusion for some time.
“I just love giant robots, so I have been pestering Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] and [Graham Wagner] like, ‘When are we getting Liberty Prime?'” Nolan shared. “Now we just need to figure out how to build it. That’s the fun part.”
When asked if Liberty Prime would be constructed practically, Nolan confirmed, “Oh, 100%. We always try. We always try first and see if we can build it for real, and we often get there.” The Brotherhood’s power armor in the series is indeed real, crafted by Legacy Effects. However, recreating Liberty Prime will present more challenges due to its size and complexity.
In the Fallout universe, Liberty Prime was developed by the US Army to win the war against China. After the apocalypse, the Brotherhood discovered an intact Liberty Prime in the Capital Wasteland and repurposed it as their own weapon. In the games, Liberty Prime first appears in Fallout 3 as an ally to the player. After its destruction in Fallout 3’s Broken Steel DLC, players must rebuild the robot in Fallout 4, deciding whether to ally with the Brotherhood.
Liberty Prime is one of the most formidable assets in the game, and it’s likely to be just as powerful in the series. This gives the Brotherhood the capability to take down Caesar’s Legion, the New California Republic, and anyone else who stands in their way, significantly shifting the dynamics for Fallout season 3.
