The Switch 2 is already a major hit for Nintendo, but recent sales figures reveal that the five-year-old PS5 outperformed it in the last quarter, including the holiday season.
In Sony’s latest financial report covering the quarter from October 1 to December 31, the PS5 sold eight million units. With lifetime sales now at 84.2 million, that brings the total for Sony’s current-gen hardware to over 92.2 million units.
While it’s still early to compare that impressive figure to the Switch 2’s 17.37 million lifetime sales, it’s noteworthy that Nintendo’s latest console had a slower quarter despite its recent launch. Analyzing the hybrid handheld’s sales from October to the end of 2025, it sold 7.01 million units during that time, indicating it wasn’t the top choice on Christmas wish lists, trailing by nearly a million.
However, it’s not all bad news for Nintendo. In its latest financial results, the company confirmed that the Switch 2 is the “fastest-selling dedicated video game platform released by Nintendo to date.” Additionally, the original Switch has now become Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, surpassing the DS with a staggering 155.37 million units sold. During the same timeframe, the Switch 2 also officially outsold the Wii U’s lifetime sales, a milestone that was always a matter of when, not if, even for those who champion the underrated 2012 console.
Nintendo president has stated that the $450 price tag for the Switch 2 will remain unchanged for now, despite ongoing RAM shortages.
