Despite the ongoing memory shortage, Sony’s CFO has indicated that the company should be stable at least until the end of 2026, which is promising news for those eyeing a PS5.

The current memory shortage is impacting nearly every tech company, as AI firms have consumed about 40% of DRAM production, leading to rising RAM prices. Many are curious about how this will influence console pricing. While Nintendo’s president has stated that the Switch 2’s price won’t increase for now, Valve is reassessing the pricing and release schedule for Steam Machines due to these shortages.

In a recent earnings call, Sony CFO Lin Tao addressed the memory shortage, reassuring that the company is in a good position. “We are already set to secure the minimum amount needed for the year-end sales season of the next fiscal year,” Tao stated, adding that they plan to negotiate with suppliers to ensure sufficient supply to meet customer demand. This bodes well for availability into 2027.

Tao also mentioned the potential impact on hardware pricing, saying, “Given where we are in our console cycle, we can adjust our hardware sales strategy flexibly.” While he didn’t specifically mention plans to raise console prices, he suggested that Sony aims to avoid a PS5 price hike, stating, “We intend to minimize the impact of increased memory costs by focusing on monetizing our existing user base and expanding our software and network service revenue.”

Yes, the Steam Machine will launch later than anticipated and at a higher price, but consider this a heads-up rather than a setback.
