28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has been pulled from theaters following a significant drop in box office performance, and fans are not pleased.

Reports indicate that the film was removed from around 1,500 theaters over the weekend after earning just $1.6 million. The sequel, penned by Alex Garland, had a production budget of approximately $63 million and has only managed to pull in $53 million so far. This is particularly surprising given the film’s critical acclaim, boasting the highest Rotten Tomatoes score in the 28 Days Later franchise at 93%, surpassing the original film featuring Cillian Murphy, which holds an 87% rating.

The Bone Temple acts as a sequel to 28 Years Later, which premiered in 2025. Alfie Williams returns as Spike, who finds himself navigating a post-apocalyptic Britain, only to be captured and drawn into a twisted cult led by the eccentric Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell).

While a third installment in the 28 Years Later series was in the works, the disappointing box office results have left fans anxious about its future.

“Bone Temple’s box office run feels like a group project where one member (Sony) didn’t pull their weight, and now we’re all facing the consequences,” one fan remarked.

“There was a massive BLIZZARD the second weekend! It deserves more time!” another fan expressed.

“Hey, remember when a brutal snowstorm kept a huge part of the US from hitting theaters for like two weeks? Come on,” another chimed in.

“I’m hoping Cillian Murphy’s involvement will help get the third film greenlit,” someone else commented regarding the planned sequel.

“The next movie will definitely happen; there’s too much potential in marketing Cillian Murphy in ‘the true sequel to 28 Days Later,'” another fan added. “Worst case, they drop the subtitle and just call it 29 Years Later or something similar.”
