Blizzard Embraces GenAI, But Overwatch Developers Prefer a Handcrafted Experience

As AI technology continues to make its way into game development, concerns are rising about how studios are incorporating it, particularly in areas like art and dialogue. While some of this anxiety is justified, it can also lead to unfounded accusations, with fans mistakenly identifying AI-generated content where it doesn’t exist. The Overwatch team at Blizzard has found itself at the center of such discussions. So, what’s Blizzard’s official stance on generative AI? It appears the company has a unified approach, but the Overwatch team holds a different perspective.

During a recent group interview at Blizzard’s Irvine campus, Overwatch leadership was asked about the integration of generative AI into their workflow. Blizzard president Johanna Faries emphasized a “dev-led” approach, allowing teams to utilize available technology as long as they feel comfortable and it aligns with the company’s values of responsibility.

“At Blizzard, we have a centralized governance team focused on AI and its role in our development cycles,” Faries explained. “This team is cross-functional, bringing together diverse voices to consider not just current trends but also our long-term vision. We want to ensure that we don’t hinder developers and artists from exploring new tools that could enhance creativity or reduce tedious tasks. Happy developers lead to great games, right?”

Faries added that while AI can be a valuable asset in the creative process, it’s crucial that its use is responsible and reflects the company’s identity. “I feel confident in our vetting process to ensure it’s secure, safe, and aligned with our values. Ultimately, I want our teams to feel safe exploring AI to enhance their joy in their work. I believe we have a solid process in place for responsible use.”

It seems Blizzard is open to its developers using AI if they choose, although Faries didn’t elaborate on what constitutes “secure,” “safe,” or “values led” usage. However, the Overwatch team, particularly game director Aaron Keller, appears less enthusiastic about AI. In a recent interview, Keller expressed a desire for Overwatch to remain a “handcrafted universe.”

“We don’t want to put AI-generated content in front of players,” Keller stated. “It’s just not something we’re comfortable with. The landscape is always changing, and I can’t predict how players or society will view this in five or ten years. There’s no permanent policy on this, but for now, we want Overwatch to feel handcrafted, and it truly is.”

For the time being, it looks like Overwatch won’t feature any AI-generated heroes, maps, or skins. This discussion comes on the heels of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, which has reportedly encouraged AI use within the company. Additionally, Blizzard teams, including those working on Overwatch and Diablo, have recently unionized, with concerns about AI potentially replacing artists being a significant issue for organizers.

Overwatch is set for a major overhaul next week, dropping the “2” from its title, introducing five new heroes, and restructuring its seasonal content to focus on linear storytelling.
