It seems like Nintendo Direct presentations are now aimed squarely at retro enthusiasts, and if you share that passion, today’s showcase delivered some exciting news. The standout moment was the announcement of Hamster’s Console Archives, a series of emulated re-releases that keep the Virtual Console spirit alive on Switch 2.

For years, Hamster Corporation has been reviving classic arcade games on modern platforms through their Arcade Archives series, featuring hundreds of titles from iconic classics like Pac-Man and Space Invaders to lesser-known but historically important gems.

Now, Hamster is branching out into console games. The first two titles in the Console Archives lineup are available now: the 1996 extreme sports game Cool Boarders and the 1990 action platformer Ninja Gaiden 2. The store pages humorously refer to them as “a 32-bit home console” and “an 8-bit home console,” but these are the PS1 and NES classics you remember fondly.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is especially noteworthy, having just been added to the Nintendo Switch Online Classics library last November. This subscription-based library has been the go-to for accessing classic games on the modern eShop, and retro fans have long been asking Nintendo to offer a way to purchase these titles outright.

In a way, Console Archives seems to be the true successor to the Wii Virtual Console, providing a collection of classic games that you can buy without the hassle of maintaining a subscription.

The big question now is which console games Hamster will manage to license. The Arcade Archives series already boasts a diverse range, including Nintendo classics like the arcade versions of Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. If Nintendo allows a third-party developer to release first-party NES games on its eShop, we could be entering a new era of accessibility for retro titles.

These are the best NES games of all time.
