With the announcement that the beloved RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 is being adapted into an HBO series, helmed by The Last of Us co-showrunner Craig Mazin, fans are expressing their concerns.

For starters, Larian Studios isn’t involved in the adaptation, and the game features multiple endings for its main story and individual characters. Since the HBO series will continue after the game, certain choices will inevitably become canon, which could upset fans.

“This is going to be so bad that it’ll make Game of Thrones season 8 seem good,” one fan remarked.

“‘Baldur’s Gate 3 developers Larian have no involvement with the show. Are they insane? The best adaptations all have the developers involved,” another fan argued.

“I gotta say, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to please game fans with this one. I’ll definitely watch it, but I’m just hoping for a fun DnD show with dragons, magic, and monsters,” said another.

“Why do they have to follow up on anything? Can’t they just create a completely new story in a different time? It’s going to feel like a cheap fanservice cash grab,” another user commented.

“I don’t have faith that certain characters won’t be flanderized or that dumb plot points won’t be ‘canonized’ in this,” expressed another concerned fan.

“Why not just, I don’t know, create an original, self-contained story in the same setting?” asked another.

“Really hope they don’t mess up the characters and decide to canonize the worst choices to maintain the lore…” shared another person’s concerns.

“I don’t want to be negative, but I am very skeptical of this trend of adapting every game into a TV show. BG3, where role-playing and making choices are core elements, doesn’t seem to translate well to television,” another fan concluded.

Still, The Last of Us season 1 is often hailed as one of the best video game adaptations ever, so we shouldn’t dismiss the Baldur’s Gate 3 series just yet.

“After investing nearly 1000 hours in the amazing world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s a dream come true to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin stated. “I’m a devoted fan of D&D and truly admire how Swen Vincke and his talented team adapted it. I can’t wait to bring Baldur’s Gate and its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as possible, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for trusting me with this important property.”

The show currently lacks a release date, and Mazin is busy with The Last of Us season 3 for now.
