Wolfenstein 3 is still in the works, with studio director Jerk Gustafsson confirming that MachineGames has always aimed to complete the trilogy that began over a decade ago.

In a recent interview, Gustafsson discussed the studio’s future following their successful project, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, but remained tight-lipped about the timeline for the conclusion of their alternate history saga.

“Our intention has always been to return to Wolfenstein,” Gustafsson stated. “We want to finish the trilogy. When that happens is something I can’t comment on. It could be soon or later, but we’re not finished with it. That’s what I can share.”

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus aimed to “make America Nazi-free again” about eight years ago. Since then, the developer has attempted a co-op spin-off with Wolfenstein: Youngblood and delivered the acclaimed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which is set to launch on Switch 2 on May 12.

Last year, the studio head revealed that the team has had a trilogy planned since they outlined 2014’s New Order, knowing “what will happen in the second one, and what will happen in the third one.” Multiple reports have suggested that a Wolfenstein sequel is in development, though specifics remain scarce. One can assume it will involve more Nazi-slaying action.

While Gustafsson didn’t reveal details about the current project, he mentioned that MachineGames is planning “at least a couple of games” now that they are part of Microsoft. “It would be much worse if we released a game and then had to figure out what to do next.” This suggests that whatever is in the works has likely been in development since before the Great Circle’s 2024 release.

The developers of Wolfenstein 2 once joked about wanting to depict Hitler in an outrageous way, but a producer advised against it, saying, “We all need to be saved from ourselves sometimes.”
