After sweeping The Game Awards and winning over fans, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to earn accolades. Studio Sandfall Interactive has recently been honored by the French government for its significant contribution to the nation’s gaming landscape.
In a LinkedIn post, Sandfall Interactive shared, “We were received yesterday at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. This distinction honors us, and our deepest thanks go especially to our team who shaped this world and to the millions of players who have brought it to life.”
Gaining recognition from peers is impressive, but receiving a cultural accolade from your country is a remarkable achievement, especially in the gaming sector. Despite the industry’s vastness, video games often struggle to gain the same artistic recognition as film or literature.
Clair Obscur’s success has not gone unnoticed in the French political arena. President Emmanuel Macron praised the JRPG-inspired game as a “great prize” for Montpellier and France, congratulating the team for being the first Game of the Year winner at The Game Awards from the country.
Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture, acknowledged Sandfall’s achievement on Twitter, emphasizing the cultural value that games bring to the nation. The studio now joins the ranks of gaming legends like Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, Rayman creator Michel Ancel, and Frédérick Raynal, the mind behind the original Alone in the Dark, as recipients of the Order of Arts and Letters, placing them among esteemed company.
Following Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Grammy snub, renowned Journey composer Austin Wintory dedicated his win to Sandfall’s “once-in-a-generation-level rarity.”
