Mewgenics, the latest cat-breeding roguelike from the creator of The Binding of Isaac, has made waves as the first game of 2026 to score in the 90s on Metacritic and OpenCritic.
After a lengthy 13-year wait since its initial announcement, Mewgenics has finally launched. Despite facing cancellation and a reboot, it has exceeded expectations, successfully following up one of the most beloved roguelikes ever made, The Binding of Isaac, which served as a testing ground for the developers before creating Mewgenics.
In a review, a managing editor awarded Mewgenics a 4.5 out of 5, describing it as “a dense, detailed, and hugely varied strategy roguelike.”
The review highlights that “Mewgenics borrows much from its iconic predecessor with an imaginative and rewarding gameplay loop.” While the occasional harsh RNG can be frustrating, it doesn’t detract from its status as a worthy successor to The Binding of Isaac.
Overall, reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with many scores from various outlets landing around nine out of ten, along with a few perfect tens and eights. This acclaim has positioned Mewgenics as the first game to break into the 90s for 2026, currently holding a score of 90 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic, briefly ranking as the second-highest rated game ever on the latter, just behind Mario Odyssey.
Having played Mewgenics since receiving review codes, I’ve logged 105 hours so far. It truly lives up to the hype and stands as a worthy successor to my all-time favorite, The Binding of Isaac. Mewgenics is poised to be my Game of the Year for 2026, and it’s going to be tough to beat for the best soundtrack of the year.
The creator of The Binding of Isaac’s new roguelike, Mewgenics, has already achieved over a third of the achievements that Isaac has, despite being 11 years and three expansions behind.
