Bethesda’s Todd Howard acknowledges the “anxiety from fans” regarding the studio’s silence on Fallout 5, especially with the hype surrounding the Fallout TV show. He assures that development is ongoing and news will eventually surface.

In an insightful oral history of Fallout, Howard, alongside other Bethesda veterans, discusses the future of the franchise. The only solid information about Fallout 5 is that it will release after The Elder Scrolls 6, another title shrouded in mystery. While this may not be the most reassuring news, Howard remains hopeful.

“Looking at Fallout 76, we’ve never stopped developing Fallout,” he states. “We’ve had a dedicated team working on it for a long time, so Fallout is the franchise we’re focusing on the most. Currently, the majority of our internal team is on Elder Scrolls 6, but we are working on other Fallout projects that we haven’t revealed yet. There will be a time for that.”

He adds, “I understand the anxiety from fans, like, ‘What else? Feed me!'” But he reassures, “We’re working on things. We like to take our time, and there will be a moment to discuss the future of Fallout. We want to create special moments for our fans.”

Longtime quest designer Emil Pagliarulo, who recently led design on Starfield, shares his vision for future Fallout games. “I’d be thrilled with a game that matches the success of previous Fallout titles and continues to deliver what fans love,” he says, emphasizing the desire for games that offer hundreds of hours of gameplay.

He also acknowledges the lengthy gap between Fallout releases and how the gaming landscape has evolved. Using Oblivion Remastered as an example, he notes, “People forget that in the original Oblivion, you couldn’t sprint. So, of course, we’re going to include that in the remaster. The industry has progressed, and we want to keep up.”

In closing, Howard emphasizes the significance of “role-playing games where you can immerse yourself and invest a lot of time,” noting that fans “want to experience it in new ways.” While we may only have small hints for now, with a bit of patience, we can piece together something substantial as we await Fallout 5.

Reports suggest that a remaster of Fallout 3 is still in the works, with Bethesda aiming for a level of polish akin to Oblivion Remastered, though it might be wise to aim even higher.
