Fallout star Walton Goggins has revealed that fans are curious if the hit Prime Video series is actually the long-awaited fifth installment of the video game franchise, and he has a straightforward response.
“For me, it was all on the page,” Goggins shared. “They did their homework, and it was built into the DNA of the story that they created. This isn’t like Fallout 1, Fallout 2, or Fallout 3… it’s its own thing. It’s original content within the Fallout universe. Some people have asked, ‘Is it Fallout 5?’ That’s way above my paygrade. [laughs]”
Fallout 4 launched in 2015, but official chatter about a fifth game didn’t surface until around 2021, when co-creator Todd Howard mentioned having a “one-page design document” for it. While that’s promising, we’re likely looking at a release no earlier than 2030. Bethesda has stated that most of its resources are currently focused on The Elder Scrolls 6, which began pre-production in 2022.
However, the Fallout TV series, which just concluded its second season, feels a bit like Fallout 5… It features two major locations from the games, introduces new characters alongside some fan favorites, and is set to unveil a brand new location in season 3 that hasn’t appeared in the games before. The series is also considered canon, meaning events in the show impact the games since they all exist in the same universe… so, kind of?
