Like its predecessors, Nioh 3 can feel a bit tricky right from the start, but a few tweaks in the settings can make a world of difference. If you’re jumping into Nioh 3, I highly recommend adjusting some control and UI settings to see how they compare to the defaults.

In the controls sub-menu on page 1, you’ll find the “configure controls” option, which offers different templates. Starting with option A, I suggest trying option B. This setup makes martial arts and combo extenders more accessible by linking them to the left shoulder (guard) button, with the only adjustment being that you’ll activate spirit skills using the D-pad. Give it a shot and see what you think.

I also strongly encourage you to explore the game settings sub-menu. On page six, you’ll find options for auto-disposing of items and settings for which rarities to automatically discard (common, uncommon, etc.). If you’re not familiar with the loot system or are focused on farming an armor set bonus, it’s best to hold off on this feature initially. However, there may come a time when you want to clear out common or uncommon items from your inventory, making these settings quite handy.

Nioh is generous with loot, which is why I recommend enabling the auto-pickup setting found on page five of the game settings. This feature allows your character to automatically collect any items you walk over without needing extra prompts. It saves you countless clicks in the long run, and I find it just as satisfying as manually picking up items. There’s something thrilling about watching shiny loot jump into your inventory when you open a chest.

As you progress into the late game, check out page two of the menu settings. Here, you can increase the number of item shortcuts available in the D-pad menus at the bottom-left corner, where you access elixirs and spells.

You start with two sets, or eight slots, but you can expand that to three or four sets. When you have a variety of items and spells, this can be incredibly useful. A strategy I’ve found effective is placing the elixir in the top slot of every set, so you never have to cycle back to healing while still having access to nine other items or spells, though your approach may vary based on your build.

Lastly, take a look at page three of the menu settings. You’ll find options for managing the “!” marks that indicate new entries in main menus like inventory, titles, and story progress. Nioh 3 bombards you with numerous updates whenever you discover or complete something, and if those pesky exclamation marks annoy you as much as they do me, you might spend a lot of time clearing them. Adjusting these settings can help you eliminate notifications and restore some tranquility to your experience.

If there’s anything else about Nioh 3 that’s bothering you, it’s worth diving into the related settings. There’s a good chance you can customize it to your liking, as some default settings can be puzzling. Better options are out there; you just need to find them. Start with these suggestions and fine-tune your experience until it feels just right.

Nioh 3 has set a new record for the series’ highest Steam concurrent player count, thanks to its simultaneous launch on PC this time around.
