If all the films Guillermo del Toro had envisioned had come to fruition, his filmography would have expanded significantly. From the unrealized Justice League Dark movie to the third Hellboy installment we’ll sadly never see, the director has a treasure trove of projects that never made it to the screen, including a collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola.
In a recent conversation, del Toro responded to a post expressing interest in a GDT-directed adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo featuring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth. The idea of reuniting this talented group for such a project is certainly intriguing, and del Toro himself mentioned that he still has the screenplay. “I have the screenplay! Which we developed with Francis Coppola around 1997-1998, and it’s a Gothic Western!”
He has indeed held onto this screenplay for quite some time. In 2009, he shared insights about the script during an interview, stating, “It’s a Gothic-Western retelling of The Count Of Monte Cristo, co-written with Kitt Carson and Matthew Robbins between 1993 and 1998. I wrote much of it during a tumultuous period in my life, so it’s filled with a lot of emotion. I truly love that screenplay.”
At that time, del Toro was still eager to bring his vision to life. “If I have to fight, sue, or do whatever it takes to keep the project, I will. I want to see it made.” However, as time has passed and other projects have taken precedence, it’s understandable that this classic revenge tale remains on the back burner for now. Who knows? Given the time it took him to bring The Creature to life with Frankenstein, perhaps The Count of Monte Cristo will eventually find its way back onto his agenda.
