This matchup is historically unusual, marking the first Super Bowl since 2003 to feature two teams that missed the playoffs the previous year. New England enters as a 4.5-point underdog, a position that has proven fruitful in recent Super Bowls.

The Seahawks began the season with a rebuilding mindset. After parting ways with longtime head coach Pete Carroll and narrowly missing the playoffs in Mike Macdonald’s debut year, they made the bold choice to replace Geno Smith with free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold, a decision that raised eyebrows.

However, this move sparked a breakout season. Seattle won 14 games, clinched the NFC West, and secured the No. 1 seed. Darnold thrived, Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerged as the league’s top receiver, and the Seahawks boasted an elite defense, leading the NFL in defensive EPA/play and scoring defense while eliminating two division rivals in the playoffs.

New England’s ascent was equally surprising. Under Mike Vrabel’s first year as head coach and with Drake Maye starting for the first time, the Patriots faced skepticism after a Week 1 loss to the Raiders. They bounced back to reclaim the AFC East and finished with 14 wins.

Maye quickly became one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, ranking first in EPA+CPOE composite and leading the league’s most efficient passing attack. The Patriots also showcased a formidable defense, finishing in the top five for scoring defense and top six against the run.
