It seems the shark horror genre is here to stay, as Netflix moves ahead with a sequel to its 2024 hit Under Paris, bringing in a new director to take charge.
According to reports, French director Alexandre Aja will helm Under Paris 2. This isn’t Aja’s first venture into horror featuring aquatic monsters; he’s known for directing the 2010 horror-comedy Piranha 3D and the 2019 thriller Crawl.
The original Under Paris is set during the Paris Olympics and follows a marine researcher racing against time to save the city from a mutant shark that has adapted to freshwater. The story unfolds as triathletes prepare to dive into the Seine, now home to the monstrous creature and its young.
The film received mixed reviews, holding a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it resonated with Netflix viewers, quickly climbing into the top 10 of non-English language films on the platform, sitting just behind the Norwegian thriller Troll, with 102.3 million views.
While Netflix hasn’t made an official statement, lead actress Bérénice Bejo is expected to reprise her role, along with producer Vincent Roget.
It remains unclear why writer-director Xavier Gens isn’t returning for the sequel, but fans can feel reassured with Aja at the helm, known for his successful 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, as well as Mirrors and Horns.
A release date for Under Paris 2 has not yet been announced.
