No Rest for the Wicked, the stunning Early Access ARPG from the creators of Ori and the Blind Forest, has recently experienced a surge in popularity thanks to a significant discount and a new co-op update. Director Thomas Mahler aims to establish the game as a long-term success, comparable to giants like Minecraft or Fortnite.
To celebrate the Together update, which introduced the highly requested co-op feature to this Diablo-inspired title, the developers launched a 40% discount that propelled it up the Steam best sellers list. This combination of an update and a sale revitalized interest in a game that had seen its momentum wane.
In just 15 days, No Rest for the Wicked sold an additional 500,000 copies, bringing its total to 1.5 million and counting. Mahler noted that sales have remained strong even after the discount ended.
“Wow – even after the sale ended, our sales are still absurdly strong,” he tweeted, sharing that he recognized many ARPG fans were eager for co-op gameplay, prompting a strong push for the update alongside the discount and a free weekend. “The goal was simple: Make it as easy as possible for people to try the game. We were confident that once players got their hands on it, they’d have an absolute blast.”
“Money is tight for a lot of people right now, and they’re more careful about what they buy,” he added. “But our conversion rates were through the roof, which tells me something important: People are still willing to spend money on the right products – you just have to make it easy for them to see why it’s worth their hard-earned cash.”
With this newfound success, Mahler expressed optimism that the full release could achieve even greater heights as it becomes fully polished and launches on consoles. “I’m hoping that we might just be able to replicate the kind of success that Larian had with Baldur’s Gate 3 – and if we do, we’ll have a platform with Wicked that will allow us to continuously add more content and make things even deeper and more expansive,” he continued.
Mahler envisions the game evolving into a major hit, potentially surpassing even Diablo. “Ultimately, I see Wicked more in line with titles like Minecraft, Stardew Valley, Fortnite, GTA V,” he tweeted. “Games that people purchase that will keep growing and blossoming for years to come.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 “launched into Early Access at full price, and personally I never loved that approach,” says the head of No Rest For the Wicked, explaining the decision to raise the price to $60.
