In a recent update, Valve has introduced a feature that allows Steam Early Access developers to finally display a 1.0 release date or an estimated timeframe. This addition is a welcome surprise for many.

The update provides a dedicated area for developers to indicate when they plan to transition from Early Access to a full launch. They can choose to specify an exact date or a broader timeframe, such as a year or quarter, alongside the usual Early Access disclaimer.

Valve noted that this feature was added in response to frequent requests from developers, many of whom were already sharing their 1.0 timelines through various channels like store page descriptions, Steam Event news, social media, and forums.

The platform also emphasized that using this feature is optional. “Just because this feature exists does not mean you should or must use it,” the announcement states. “It’s best to display a date only if you’re already in direct communication with your players about your planned 1.0 release and are confident in that timeline.”

Valve advises caution when setting specific release dates, as missing them can lead to confusion or disappointment. Maintaining trust with the community is crucial in Early Access, and there’s no rush to announce a 1.0 release date too far in advance.

Now, with the ability to see a 1.0 release date, the days of hovering over that ‘Add To Cart’ button while searching for information should be behind us. Kudos to Valve for this improvement!

Valve is also reassessing the pricing and release schedule for Steam Machines due to ongoing shortages in memory and storage.
