A sequel movie for one of anime’s most unsettling hidden gems is set to release in 2026.

Few anime from the last decade have sparked as much debate as *Made in Abyss*. Adapted from Akihito Tsukushi’s web manga, this series blends creativity and mystery with a harrowing exploration of humanity’s darker aspects, often featuring unsettling scenes with seemingly adorable characters. Following two seasons released in 2017 and 2022, along with a film in 2020, *Made in Abyss* is set to expand into a film franchise, with *Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery* confirmed for a fall 2026 release.

The *Made in Abyss* X account dropped a trailer on February 8, showcasing clips from previous seasons alongside a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come, all underscored by a hauntingly beautiful score. The original team from Kinema Citrus is back on board, along with the voice actors reprising their roles.

Set in a fictional world dominated by a massive chasm on a remote island, the Abyss is a mysterious expanse that stretches endlessly, concealing secrets, ancient artifacts, and bizarre creatures. The Cave Raiders, daring explorers, venture into the Abyss’s depths, but they must contend with the Abyss Curse, a mysterious affliction that strikes those attempting to return to the surface. The deeper one descends, the more severe the curse’s effects become. The story follows Riko, an orphan determined to follow in the footsteps of her mother, a legendary White Whistle who is believed to have perished after reaching the Abyss’s elusive bottom.

Summarizing the myriad mysteries and peculiarities of the story is no easy task. Even after consuming the entire anime or manga, countless aspects of the Abyss remain shrouded in mystery, keeping fans engaged during the series’ lengthy breaks. However, the gripping and often brutal narrative is a significant factor in *Made in Abyss*’s massive following. The Abyss is a ruthless environment where survival is never assured, and Raiders sometimes resort to extreme measures against one another to stay alive.

Those who venture into its depths undergo profound transformations, and the series revels in exploring the raw, unfiltered nature of humanity.

With *Awakened Mystery* on the horizon, now is the perfect time to dive into *Made in Abyss*. The anime is available for streaming on Prime Video in the U.S. and HIDIVE worldwide.
