Mewgenics Developer Estimates It Could Take ‘Months or Years’ to Uncover All Game Secrets

It’s been almost 15 years since the initial reveal of Mewgenics, and players are still unprepared for the depth this feline tactical RPG offers. According to the developers, it may take a while for fans to fully grasp all the intricacies packed into the game.

For those who haven’t heard the buzz about this upcoming roguelike, here’s a quick overview. Mewgenics, crafted by the minds behind iconic titles, is a tactical roguelike where players dispatch teams of cats on perilous quests. Surviving cats can breed, passing down traits and abilities acquired during their adventures, both beneficial and detrimental.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg; Mewgenics is incredibly rich in content. After 40 hours in my first playthrough, I’ve only scratched the surface, experiencing about 14% of what the game has to offer. Despite its generosity, Mewgenics is filled with mysteries, as highlighted in a recent AMA with the developers.

When asked to rate the number of secrets in Mewgenics on a scale from 1 to 10, creator Edmund McMillen responded, “There’s a lot of little things that I think people will be discovering for months or years. But we will reserve the true ARG level stuff for DLC.”

Back in 2015, when the gross-out roguelike received DLC, players uncovered an achievement tied to a challenging mode that led to a mysterious machine where they could donate money. This sparked an intricate treasure hunt involving updated icons, secret characters, cryptic social media hints, ciphers, and real-world clues, culminating in the introduction of a new character.

McMillen’s response hints at the potential for Mewgenics DLC and suggests an elaborate mystery component. Given the extensive post-launch support for The Binding of Isaac, fans might have anticipated this. The prospect of Mewgenics expanding further is exciting.

The game is already massive, featuring what seems like hundreds of items, abilities, and endless cat combinations. The breeding system alone is complex for those aiming to create powerful felines. Some players report over a hundred hours in Mewgenics, still discovering new elements with each run, from new characters and bosses to quirky moments like cats bursting into song. The production values are on par with titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong, showcasing remarkable attention to detail across its vast scope.

While it will take time to uncover everything, the promise of more content is thrilling. Given McMillen’s history with ARGs since 2015, fans can expect new challenges that are resistant to datamining.

Mewgenics launches on Steam on February 10, and early reviews are stellar, marking it as the highest-rated game of the year so far. Plus, it’s a fantastic experience on Steam Deck.
