Drone Cameras Steal the Show at the Winter Olympics

This year’s Winter Olympics have been a visual treat, largely thanks to skilled drone operators delivering breathtaking footage of the Games’ most exhilarating events.

Drones equipped with cameras have been capturing sports action for over a decade. However, following a near-miss incident in 2015, their use in skiing and snowboarding events was largely restricted. Fast forward to today, and drone technology has significantly advanced, making them smaller, more reliable, and safer. This year, drones play a prominent role in the Winter Olympics coverage, showcasing stunning visuals that elevate the viewing experience.

One of the standout applications of this technology is the drone footage following the women’s downhill skiers. The intensity and speed of the athletes are vividly captured in a way that traditional camera angles simply can’t convey.

You really can’t appreciate the speed of these athletes from a static camera as they race down mountains or glide across ice. But with a drone flying right behind them, the perspective is exhilarating, revealing just how fast these competitors are moving. Just check out how quickly this snowboarder descends the slope!

And the speed skaters? They zip around the rink with a velocity that’s hard to fathom until you see it from a drone’s eye view.

Initially, I was concerned that the drones might disrupt the athletes, but it turns out they hardly notice the buzzing sound. As long as the drones maintain a safe distance, they pose no threat. These drones are piloted by experienced operators who collaborate with a dedicated technician and director to ensure the athletes’ safety while capturing these incredible shots.

“When a camera is chasing the athlete down the hill — right in front of them or right behind them — you truly get the sense of how fast they’re going,” said a coordinating director for the Olympic coverage. “That’s virtually impossible to capture with a wide shot from the side. The drone coverage takes us to a place we’ve traditionally never been.”

Watching these clips of drones racing alongside athletes makes me wish for sports games that capture this level of excitement!
