Masters of the Universe director Travis Knight has made it clear that his vision for live-action Skeletor stays true to the character’s iconic look from the He-Man cartoon.

“I said, ‘Forget that. Skeletor has a skull face,'” Knight stated when discussing past portrayals of the villain. “That’s just how it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, plain and simple.”

In the 1987 Masters of the Universe film, Skeletor was portrayed by Frank Langella, who wore a skull mask and hood to hide his human features. However, the design for the 2026 film presents Skeletor as a full skeleton with glowing red eyes, blending practical effects and CGI. While we’re a bit bummed he’s not rocking his classic purple cloak and armor from the original 1983 cartoon, we’ll manage.

The film features Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, aka He-Man, who is living a normal life on Earth until he’s summoned back to Eternia to confront Skeletor (Jared Leto). The cast also includes Mendes as Teela, Johannes Haukur Johannesson as Fisto, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Kristen Wiig as Roboto, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Sasheer Zamata as Suzie. (And yes, I’m still sad there’s no She-Ra in this one.)

Masters of the Universe is set to hit theaters on June 5. In the meantime, keep an eye out for our guide to the most exciting upcoming movies.
