Director Ryan Coogler is currently working on The X-Files reboot and has sought guidance from former X-Files writer and producer Vince Gilligan.
“Vince gave me a couple hours of advice over Zoom and answered all the questions I had – I’ve got them all in my notebook, and I go back to it often,” Coogler shared, noting that he’s “deep in now” with the writing process.
The reboot was announced by X-Files creator Chris Carter in 2023, with updates being scarce until Coogler confirmed it as his next project. While Gilligan is widely recognized for creating Breaking Bad, he also produced The X-Files and penned 29 episodes, including some of the series’ most memorable comedic and emotional moments, such as “Small Potatoes,” “Bad Blood,” and the poignant “Memento Mori,” which dealt with Scully’s cancer. Bryan Cranston even made a guest appearance in season 6.
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it,” Coogler expressed in a special interview episode of The Last Podcast on the Left. “If we do our jobs right, some of those episodes will be really scary.”
Coogler is also reportedly collaborating with Gillian Anderson on the reboot, but there’s no confirmation yet on whether Mulder or Scully will return.
The X-Files reboot currently lacks a release date. For more, stay tuned for updates on the best new TV shows coming your way in 2026 and beyond.
