New Game from The Binding of Isaac Creator Promises 500 Hours of Gameplay and Endless Secrets to Discover

On Tuesday, Mewgenics, a unique blend of tactical RPG and life-sim roguelite centered around breeding and battling cats, launched and quickly climbed to the top of Steam’s charts. Developed by the creators of a beloved indie classic, Mewgenics is poised to become a major hit among roguelite enthusiasts, largely due to its expansive scope.

During an AMA on the Steam Deck subreddit over the weekend, developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel engaged with fans and revealed that the game is much larger than anticipated. McMillen described it as “one of the largest tactical RPGs of all time,” and noted that “it will take an average player about 200+ hours to ‘beat the game’ and 500+ hours to 100% :)”

With 281 Steam achievements and 1,000 unique abilities to unlock, that estimate seems quite reasonable. Dedicated players are likely to invest even more time uncovering secrets. Glaiel mentioned, “there’s a lot of little things that I think people will be discovering for months or years. But we will reserve the true ARG level stuff for DLC.”

While the base game offers an impressive amount of content, McMillen also indicated that the team plans to start working on DLC in the coming months, aiming for a release about a year later. He hinted at a potential Switch 2 port, although the game is currently only available on PC.

Mewgenics was first announced back in 2012 but faced a lengthy development struggle, including a cancellation at one point. Despite its rocky journey, it has received positive feedback and is currently the highest-rated game of the year on Metacritic. If the success of its predecessor is any indication, Mewgenics is just beginning its exciting post-launch adventure.

I haven’t had the chance to dive into the game yet, but I’ve been enjoying watching players share their bizarre discoveries online. Even McMillen couldn’t help but share some of his own experiences during the AMA, stating: “my nephew Eli had one where he could punch one of his other cats in the face and it would send out 1000 sparkles to totally destroy all enemies instantly…the game is so insane man, you don’t even know.”
