In a surprising twist, it appears that the Cyborgs from the original Helldivers may not be the villains that Super Earth portrayed them to be. Instead, these half-human rebels seem to be the driving force behind the recent surge in Helldivers 2’s popularity on Steam.

Recent data shows that Helldivers 2 reached a peak of 151,969 players in just 24 hours, with 150,237 currently in-game as of this moment. The last time Arrowhead’s squad-based shooter saw such numbers was back in September 2025. With the release of the new Machinery of Oppression update and the onset of the Battle for Cyberstan, Helldivers are gearing up for action.

But could the Cyborgs actually have a point about wanting to maintain control over Cyberstan? They’ve sent out a series of coded messages warning Helldivers not to trust their government, claiming, “THEY LIE TO YOU, HELLDIVER. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU, HELLDIVER. YOU ARE NOT A HERO.” In a recent YouTube video, the Cyborgs assert that their only desire is peace and freedom.

Is there truth to their claims? Signs suggest there might be. According to the in-universe Strohmann News broadcast, the Cyborgs’ message is twisted to imply, “We will enslave you. We will eradicate freedom.” However, the Ministry of Truth’s broadcast appears heavily edited and suspicious.

In a Reddit thread discussing the Strohmann News clip, one Helldiver confessed, “I’d be playing for the Cyborg faction if given the option.” It seems the narrative is shifting against Super Earth.

The developers of Helldivers 2 were uncertain if players would successfully defend Super Earth last time, and as they unleash Cyberstan, they admit, “we don’t know what will happen.”
