In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the sky’s the limit—quite literally. This acclaimed 2023 open-world adventure showcases Nintendo’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of the Switch’s hardware capabilities.
In a conversation with an outlet, veteran Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma discussed how technological advancements not only enhance visuals but also grant developers the freedom to realize ambitious concepts.
“The idea of having a seamless game experience is not just about lifting restrictions; it significantly influences game design,” Aonuma explained.
Interestingly, he noted that the iconic Zelda dungeons, which have shaped the series and influenced action-adventure and RPG design, were originally constrained by hardware limitations.
“In the past, we needed a clear entrance and exit, which is why dungeons were necessary,” he said. “Now, everything can be interconnected. This freedom, made possible by hardware evolution, has positively impacted game design… It brings us joy to see how players engage with the game. We aimed to make everything possible for them.”
Assuming Aonuma was referencing Tears of the Kingdom, it’s clear Nintendo has delivered on that vision and more. I fondly recall May 2023, when players were crafting increasingly wild machines using the game’s tools. Both Tears of the Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, Breath of the Wild are technical achievements that redefine what’s possible on an aging mobile platform like the original Switch.
Nearly three years post-launch, Tears of the Kingdom continues to surprise me with innovative ways to interact with its systems, often in ways that seem game-breaking. While Aonuma may be too modest to acknowledge it, this is a testament to the Zelda team’s creativity rather than just the Switch’s capabilities.

As the Zelda team explored new contraptions that made Tears of the Kingdom shine, the director recognized the untapped potential of Breath of the Wild: “That’s why I thought a sequel would be a good idea.”
