Overwatch Breaks Steam Record with Over 165,000 Concurrent Players as It Enters a New Era

Overwatch 2 is undergoing significant changes, now simply known as Overwatch. The hero shooter is experiencing a soft reset with the launch of its latest season, which kicks off a six-part narrative arc and introduces several new characters. This relaunch is proving successful, as the game recently achieved a record high for concurrent players on Steam.

The first season of Overwatch’s Reign of Talon began on February 10, leading to a remarkable spike in player activity. According to SteamDB, 165,651 players were online simultaneously on Valve’s platform.

For context, the previous peak for concurrent players on Steam over the last year was just over 60,000, while the all-time high before this was 75,608 players when the game launched on Steam in August 2023. This new record more than doubles the previous one, marking a strong start as Blizzard celebrates a decade of its iconic first-person shooter series. This figure doesn’t even account for players on Battle.net.

The Reign of Talon is clearly serving as an effective entry point for new players. As the title suggests, it revolves around Talon’s quest for power, led by the new character Vendetta, who has formed alliances with various villainous factions worldwide. Naturally, the members of Overwatch are determined to thwart their plans, and they face a tough challenge ahead.

This season sets the tone for the game’s storytelling moving forward, with narratives unfolding over multiple seasons to enrich the lore and enhance the experience for players. Five new heroes have joined the roster this season: Domina, Emre, Mizuki, Jetpack Cat, and Anran.

Anran is set to receive a redesign following some feedback, showcasing Blizzard’s commitment to starting this new chapter on a positive note. So far, things are looking promising.

A new Overwatch voice actor even gave a shoutout to the subreddit that has been eagerly awaiting eight years for his character to become playable: “Search and destroy.”
