The Mandalorian and Grogu are set to be the most budget-friendly Star Wars film from Disney, following Andor’s hefty production cost of over $500 million.

We’re just a few months away from the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu—the first new, theatrically released Star Wars film in seven years. However, following the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story and rising production costs, recent reports indicate that this new film may have the lowest budget of any Disney-era Star Wars project to date.
According to figures from the California Film Commission, the production budget for The Mandalorian and Grogu stands at a modest $166.4 million after accounting for a $21.75 million tax credit. Even without that tax break, this budget is still significantly lower than the $200 million spent on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In contrast, the sequel trilogy had staggering budgets of $245 million, $317 million, and $275 million for each film.
Given that The Mandalorian has consistently utilized cost-effective Stagecraft technology, and considering Grogu likely doesn’t demand a hefty salary, it’s not surprising that The Mandalorian and Grogu is coming in on the lower end of the budget spectrum. The most recent third season reportedly cost around $120 million. However, this serves as another cautionary sign, especially after the lackluster reception of the recent Super Bowl ad, indicating that the Lucasfilm project may face challenges upon its May release.
Star Wars budgets often attract scrutiny. After a tumultuous production where original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were replaced by Ron Howard, Solo: A Star Wars Story’s budget ballooned to $275 million before marketing, ultimately earning less than $400 million globally. Meanwhile, the show Andor reportedly cost Disney $650 million for its 24 episodes, according to creator Tony Gilroy, and many believe it was worth every penny.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to release on May 22. Stay informed with our guide to all the upcoming Star Wars movies and shows.
