Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has shared his reflections on creating Wakanda Forever following the heartbreaking loss of Chadwick Boseman, discussing why he believes more viewers are choosing to watch the sequel at home compared to the original.
“I learned that I was more resilient than I give myself credit for – that was the biggest takeaway,” he told an outlet. “And that movie gets watched at home so much more than the first Panther did. I think about that: People may be watching when they want to feel something specific.”
Boseman passed away in August 2020 while Coogler was in the midst of writing the sequel’s script. The film was reshaped to center around the loss of Boseman’s character T’Challa, with Shuri’s grief over her brother’s death serving as the emotional core.
“I would look around at people who had been making movies as long as I had been alive, sometimes longer, and they would say: ‘I’ve never seen anything like this,'” Coogler reflected. “We had to work from a place of being brokenhearted, or else it wouldn’t have gotten done… Me and Chad were getting closer, so it felt like a wound to the heart. It was like someone had taken the sun away, and we were all these planets floating.”
Both Black Panther films are considered some of the best Marvel movies to date, and a third installment, Black Panther 3, is in development, though details remain limited.
“If it was anybody but you, I would say, ‘I can neither confirm nor deny.’ But we’re working hard on it,” Coogler mentioned last year. “Yeah, it’s the next movie.”
Black Panther 3 currently lacks a release date. In the meantime, explore our guide to all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows on the way.
