Mewgenics kicks off with an intro inspired by The Simpsons, featuring over 200 variations of the iconic opening sequence each time you start the game.

After logging over 100 hours in 2026’s top-rated game, Mewgenics, I noticed that the intro cutscene changes slightly with each launch. It took me a while to realize that the intro is a clever parody of The Simpsons, complete with the title soaring through the sky before zooming into the town of Boon County. I never connected the dots that the varying intros themselves are a nod to the show’s classic gags.

In a recent appearance on a YouTube channel, Mewgenics co-creator Edmund McMillen confirmed this connection, sharing, “the fun thing about this intro,” before one of the hosts exclaimed, “it’s The Simpsons.”

McMillen elaborated, “It’s The Simpsons, and the couch gag was the initial reason – I wanted a different outcome every time.” He also mentioned that there are around 200 different couch gags.

The intro features gravestones for McMillen and co-creator Tyler Glaiel, which can vary in shape, size, and even have graffiti (I first noticed “FAT” scrawled on McMillen’s grave). At the end of the intro, as Dr. Beansies works on a cat, you’ll see a variety of cat designs – it could have multiple heads, be deceased, be red, or anything else you can imagine.

McMillen noted that Glaiel was initially skeptical about the different opening sequences, saying, “‘No one’s going to know, they’re never going to watch it a second time,’ and he was right.” In retrospect, I feel a bit foolish for not realizing that one of my all-time favorite TV shows was being humorously referenced in what is likely to be my Game of the Year for 2026.
