Blizzard knew exactly what it was doing by introducing Jetpack Cat into Overwatch. As part of the hero shooter’s Season 1 soft reset, where Overwatch 2 reverts to simply Overwatch with a fresh narrative focus, this airborne feline has quickly become a fan favorite, for better or worse.
Jetpack Cat is precisely what it sounds like—a cat equipped with a jetpack that allows it to soar around the map. Armed with lasers for both offense and defense, this character, named Fika and voiced by Jennifer Hale (though it’s mostly meowing), is capturing hearts.
Fans are loving it. Streamer Timothy ‘TimTheTatman’ Betar shared his live reaction to the flying furball, exclaiming, “OK, I’m a cat. And I can fly. Forever???” He then explored Fika’s abilities and made a delightful discovery.
“Look at [her] little paw,” he noted, highlighting how the cat’s paws actively press buttons to fire laser beams. They are undeniably cute, and many players are sharing the same enthusiasm.
“I refuse to play anything but Jetpack Cat for the rest of my life,” declared one excited Redditor, claiming it’s “the most fun” they’ve had in Overwatch since joining in 2016. Another Reddit user chimed in, praising the character’s movement: “Stealing people and throwing them off the map is hilarious, and you can contribute offensively as well as healing.”
They’re referring to Jetpack Cat’s ability to capture other characters in a force field, which can be used to assist teammates or hinder enemies, creating numerous strategic opportunities. Streamer Frogger demonstrated this by sneaking up on an enemy team from an elevated position. However, the current limitations on these abilities suggest that a nerf may be on the horizon.
While the community buzz is mostly positive, there are some downsides. Reports indicate that players are banning Jetpack Cat in competitive matches due to its popularity. “Stop banning the cat please, I wanna have some fun and whimsy,” tweeted Overwatch streamer Flatspost.
Fika is actually a concept that dates back to the early days of the original Overwatch, where it was initially scrapped. Thankfully, the developers recognized that some ideas deserve a second chance, especially when they involve flying around as an adorable pet.
Overwatch has shattered its Steam record, more than doubling its previous peak concurrent player count with over 165,000 players diving in as Blizzard’s hero shooter embarks on a new chapter.
