Threads Introduces ‘Dear Algo’ Feature to Customize Your Feed Experience

Threads has introduced a new feature for users in the US that allows them to customize their feed recommendations by posting “Dear Algo” along with their preferences. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Meta to enhance user control over the content they see across its platforms.

The “Dear Algo” concept originated from users who began making posts with that phrase to influence their feed before it was officially implemented. After successful testing in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK, the feature is now rolling out in the US. A Meta spokesperson mentioned that they will keep refining the feature based on community feedback before a wider release.

To utilize this feature, simply create a public post starting with “Dear Algo” followed by your desired content preferences. Your request will remain active for three days, allowing you to observe how it alters your feed. For longer-term adjustments, engaging with the new content will help reinforce those changes.

Additionally, users can request to see less of certain topics. If you come across someone else’s “Dear Algo” request that resonates with you, feel free to repost it to incorporate their preferences into your feed.

Meta aims for “Dear Algo” to personalize the Threads experience, whether users are following popular trends or diving into niche interests. The company emphasizes that this feature is designed to help users discover relevant conversations.

In July, Meta appointed Connor Hayes as the dedicated lead for Threads, taking over from Instagram’s Adam Mosseri. This year, the focus is on making Threads more timely, dynamic, and integral to users’ daily routines, with the platform surpassing 400 million monthly active users in August.

While Meta began displaying ads globally on Threads last month, Hayes noted that the company will approach the prominence of ads cautiously until they ensure the app delivers significant value to users, alongside making the ads themselves valuable.
