In a developer update that feels more like a podcast at 42 minutes, Lords of the Fallen 2 developer CI Games compares the sequel’s evolution to the Batman: Arkham series, highlighting how it found its rhythm with combat.

Game director James Lowe shares that the team has discussed this Batman-like progression internally.

“Take a series like Batman: Arkham,” he explains. “Arkham Asylum established its combat abilities and laid the groundwork, but it still had room for improvement. Arkham City refined that formula while maintaining its core essence. Then Arkham Knight brought everything together perfectly. It felt like a journey, and we’re on a similar path.”

With Lords of the Fallen 2, the follow-up to a fun yet flawed reboot of one of the original FromSoftware-inspired titles, Lowe emphasizes, “we want players to feel the power behind their sword swings right from the start.”

Key elements carried over include distinct weapon and class types, which Lowe assures will be enhanced with “classes we haven’t even seen in the Soulslike genre.”

“This sets us up for even more,” he continues. “The more games we release, the more players engage with and experiment with our combat’s DNA, the better it will become.”

Creative strategist Ryan Hill highlights dual wielding as a significant evolution in combat. “In FromSoftware games, I’m always hesitant to lose my shield,” he admits, but Lords of the Fallen 2 encourages a more aggressive playstyle, fostering what Lowe describes as “player confidence” in offense. Hill notes, “a few hours in, I realize I’m not using my shield. I’m dashing and attacking more. It didn’t feel easier, but it felt different.”

However, Lowe cautions, “you might overextend with your attacks, depleting your stamina and facing consequences.”

Dual wielding in Lords of the Fallen 2 features unique move sets that go beyond simply mirroring attacks, adding a “flamboyant edge that provides a satisfying dopamine hit,” according to Lowe.

This was a crucial focus for CI Games this time, as even the developers acknowledge that players felt there was a lack of variety among some weapon classes in the previous game. Here again, the developers promise greater individuality and flair, which is what many hoped to see from Lords of the Fallen 2. The reboot seemed to set the stage for a sequel that could truly showcase its potential, and after a significant number of patches, it’s encouraging to hear the developers pushing in these exciting directions.

In response to accusations of imitating FromSoftware, the head of Lords of the Fallen 2 stated that its Elden Ring Nightreign counterpart is set for 2024: “Visual overlap can occur in medieval fantasy.”
