The friendslop era is in full swing, and it seems the genre’s potential for success didn’t peak with last year’s hits. A new player has entered the friendslop scene: Yapyap, which has already sold 500,000 copies just a week after its launch.

“We’re blown away by the turnout,” the developers shared in a February 9 Steam post, expressing their gratitude for the incredible support from players.

Selling half a million copies in less than a week is a remarkable feat for any indie game, especially considering Yapyap only launched on February 3.

Described as “a magic-themed co-op horror game,” Yapyap flips the script on the genre. Instead of collecting treasures from haunted spots, players focus on destruction. With voice recognition spellcasting reminiscent of Mage Arena, it may not be groundbreaking, but it’s definitely engaging.

Currently, Yapyap holds a “very positive” rating of 82% on Steam, with the main critique being a lack of content. The developers are addressing bugs for now, but they have exciting plans ahead. “We want to ensure the game runs smoothly for everyone,” Maison Bap stated. “Once that’s sorted, we’ll dive into the fun additions!”

While “friendslop” may have some negative connotations, many developers embrace it proudly. Regardless of the term’s future, it’s clear that these games are here to stay.
